play food dessert tray and cake stand

If you ask my little Kirsten what she wants for Christmas, one of the things she'll tell you is a tablecloth. Why does my 3-year old want a tablecloth you ask? Because her most favourite thing in the world is having pretend picnics and tea parties and making and serving us her play food. I think she would do this all day everyday if she could. Well, Santa couldn't very well bring her just a tablecloth. Santa has to have more tricks up his sleeve than that. I found this awesome idea to make serving dishes and trays for her play food here . Just brilliant. I went to the dollar store, picked up some cheap plastic dishes, and with just a little hot glue I created these masterpieces. The beauty of this is that you can make these any colour or design you like. Kirsten's favourite colour is pink (just like her Mama), so I made some pretty pink dishes. These are also incredibly easy and quick to make, you're going to want to make them for all the little girls in your life. Kirsten is going to love these! I of course also picked up some amazingly gorgeous Haba dessert play foods to go with her serving trays. This play food is to die for. It's so pretty, I almost hate to see it get ruined by playing with it! I can't wait to see her face on Christmas morning. Now, shhhh, nobody tell Kirsten until Christmas. Here's how I made these dessert trays:

What you'll need:

plastic dishes
hot glue gun

First I started with cheap plastic dishes from my local dollar store. For the cake stand you'll need 1 plate and 1 cup. For the dessert serving tray you'll need 2 plates - one smaller and one larger, and a cup.

To make the cake tray, glue the cup, upside down, to the bottom of the plate.

To make the dessert serving tray, glue the cup, upside down, to the bottom of the smaller plate. Then glue the opening of the cup to the top of the larger plate.

Here they are with all her gorgeous new play food.

Aren't these the most gorgeous cakes and cupcakes you've ever seen? We are going to have the best tea parties!

  11. Gorgeous! I love Haba too (an addiction is probably a more appropriate term). Have you checked out ape2zebra.ca? They are an amazing Canadian online toystore with all sorts of cool Haba and other European and eco-friendly toys. They have lots of giveaways on their facebook page, and they are also donating $1 for each new "like" on facebook and order until the end of the year to purchase safe birthing kits for moms in the developing world. Fantastic!

  13. Thanks everyone for your wonderful comments! And no, I didn't make the play food. There is no way I could pull anything like that off. My sewing skills are very limited unfortunately.

Chelsea - that's so funny, I actually bought these at ape2zebra!

  14. OK Jill, I loved this so much, I'm doing the same thing for Allison. I ordered the food last night (got the same cake and squares, but something different from the cupcakes). She'll totally love it, too. Which just means that now I have to get another gift for the other two ... ummmm, thanks???
