this week in bento boxes

Pin It Sorry for the lack of posting this week! Both Kirsten and I were really sick this week and that meant not a lot of fun lunches were made! In fact, I don't think I made one fun lunch this week. Thankfully, we are feeling much better now and hopefully I can get back on track this week. These lunches are from the unposted archives:

bento100

This adorable bento was for Cam's afternoon nutrition break. The top tier held sliced cucumbers and whole strawberries. The bottom tier held a stack of whole wheat crackers, turkey lunch meat held together with cute picks, and some cubed marble cheese. So cute!

bento102

This bento was for Kirsten's afternoon nutrition break and packed in our Everest Trudeal Fuel bento sandwich box. She had a sweet little birdie sandwich and I used a sprinkle for the beak and an icing eye - I used cream cheese to keep these details in place. She also had a rectangle silicone cup with sliced cucumbers, and another silicone muffin cup with a fresh strawberry - with adorable musical picks. I finished it off with some pretzel twists.

bento99

This simple but cute little bento was for Kirsten's morning nutrition break and packed in our favourite steeltainer snack container. One section held a rectangle silicone muffin cup with a sliced cocoa granola bar. The other section held orange segments and sliced plum with an adorable bunny pick.

bento101

This sweet little bento was for Camden's morning nutrition break. It was packed in a cute little animal snack container. His bento held a silicone muffin cup filled with blueberries and I added a cute little pick. He also had a cereal bar and some pretzel twists tucked in behind.

bento104

And finally, a couple matching bento boxes for the kids afternoon nutrition break packed in our 4 square lock and lock boxes. I took two of the boxes out of each of the containers and the kids had half a chicken sandwich. I used alphabet pretzels to write their names on their sandwiches - it wasn't until I uploaded the pictures that I realized the 'N' was backwards on BOTH of their lunches. Ugghh, it must have been a long day, lol. I don't know how I managed that but think it's quite funny now! Their lunches also had a silicone muffin cup with sliced baby carrots and a silicone muffin cup with more alphabet pretzels.

make your own REAL snow cones!

I live in Canada and despise the Winter. This time of year it's freezing cold and there is way too much snow for my liking. We've even had a pretty mild winter this year, and I still can't stand it! I'm constantly looking for fun Winter activities for the kids though - I can only stay inside and try to hibernate for so long before the kiddos want to get out!! A couple weekends ago I decided to have some snow cone fun with the kiddos. We made our own snow cone syrup, gathered clean and fresh snow from outside and made our own snow cones. The kids LOVED this. Definitely a fun Winter activity that I highly recommend.

This is what you'll need:

snowcone10

To make your own snow cone syrup:

1 package of unsweetened kool-aid - any flavour
2 cups of granulated sugar
1 cup of water.

Heat the sugar and water together over medium heat in a saucepan until it boils. Boil the mixture until all the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is clear (a couple minutes). Stir in the kool-aid until completely dissolved and remove from heat. Set aside to cool completely. Place in a squirt bottle and refrigerate until needed.

* the snow cone syrup takes a while to make, so you may want to make it the day before so it's ready to go. The syrup has to be cold before you pour it on your snow cones or it will melt the snow (obviously) *

Grab some fresh and clean snow from outside and scoop it into small cups. Drizzle the syrup over the snow until well saturated. Serve with a spoon or straw.

So easy, so sugary and so much fun! The recipe made quite a bit of syrup and it stores beautifully in the fridge until next time you need it! Seeing as I still have at least 3 more months of Winter here, I think we'll be enjoying this treat often!

Of course you can enjoy this treat if you don't live anywhere with snow by just crushing some ice!

this week in bento boxes

Pin It Back to school = back to bento-making. I'm not going to lie, I did enjoy my little break from making school lunches. It was nice to get back to routine this week too though. The kids NEEDED to get back to routine. Here are some recent bento boxes I've made, as well as a couple new boxes!

bento90

Here's a fun new bento box I got for Kirsten's morning nutrition break. It's a circle-dome shaped box with 2 tiers each with their own lid to keep everything separate. It also comes with an included ice pack that fits on the inside to help keep everything cold! In the top tier I put a sliced cereal bar, and in the bottom tier I put flower-cut cantaloupe and kiwi with some blackberries. I used a cute flower stem pick in it too! Kirsten loves this new container!

bento89

Here's another colourful bento for my kiddo's morning nutrition break. One tier held a lovely fruit salad with orange segments, raspberries, plums and a cute pick. The other tier held rectangle silicone muffin cups with a sliced granola bar and alphabet pretzels.

bento91

This was a fun lunch packed in our Easylunchbox for the kiddos afternoon nutrition break. I used a dino sandwich cutter to make the sandwich (it makes 2, so each kid got one). I also added a cute little sun made of cheese and carrot. The other sections held a silicone muffin cup filled with yogurt covered pretzels and sliced cucumbers with an adorable tree trunk pick.

For those who love their EasyLunchboxes, they've come out with 4 new bright colours:

I definitely plan on getting them!

bento92

bento92-2

Here's another fun new bento box I bought. It's an adorable froggy-shaped box with an included froggy ice pack that goes on top. It's really awesome and the kids have really enjoyed this box. It has 2 tiers - 1 tier held a circle-cut sandwich with a keroppi the frog (from Helly Kitty) on top. I also snuck in a few baby tomatoes and pretzel twists. The other tier held flower cut cucumbers and carrots.

bento93

And lastly, a bento for the kids morning nutrition break packed in our favourite steeltainer. One section held a rectangle silicone muffin cup with a sliced granola bar, and the other section held flower-cut cantaloupe with a cute pick!
