handprint lorax

handprintlorax

We all went to see The Lorax in the theatre on the weekend and it was absolutely fabulous. The kiddos were so well behaved, their eyes fixated on the screen the entire movie. James and I thought it was really great too. I think it will definitely be a family favourite once it comes out on video. Kirsten asked me if we could make a Lorax craft on the weekend, and I happily obliged. Of course, my hand always goes to handprint crafts, and this was no exception. I figured her handprints would make a perfect moustache for our little Lorax. I think it turned out pretty cute, but her hands are also getting pretty big for crafts like this. It might have looked a little better with Cam's smaller hands, but he really hasn't wanted much to do with crafts lately. He's a busy little guy and doesn't like sitting still for long to do the crafts. He usually gives me about 3 minutes of craft time, and then he's on to something else! Here is how we made this craft:

What you'll need:

cardstock - 1 large white 12x12, orange, yellow, white
scissors
glue
yellow paint
paint brush
black and green sharpie

Directions:

1. using your scissors, cut a Lorax body shape out of your orange cardstock. Glue this on your large white 12x12 sheet.

2. also using your scissors, cut a nose out of your orange cardstock, 2 eyebrows out of your yellow cardstock, and 2 eyes out of your white cardstock. Glue these pieces on your lorax.

3. using your green and black sharpie, colour in the eyes

4. paint your child's hands with the yellow paint and have them stamp their hands on the Lorax to create his moustache. Allow to dry.

5. using your black sharpie, write the quote on your creation - "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Such a great quote from the movie!!

fun food friday: Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

funfoodfriday84

Today, March 2nd, is Dr. Seuss' birthday. We are huge fans of a lot of his books in this house. Last year we had a whole Dr. Seuss celebration for his birthday, but this year I saw that his birthday was on a Friday, so I just had to make the kids a fun lunch using the themes from a few of our favourite books. I had a lot of fun making this one. It actually turned out a lot better than I imagined. That's always a pleasant surprise. This was surprising pretty easy to make - it's amazing what you can do with a tortilla and a pair of scissors! Here's how I made this lunch:

The Cat in the Hat - use 2 white tortillas and a pair of scissors. I printed out a picture of the Cat in the Hat and used my scissors to cut the shape out. I just eyeballed it and it turned out really well! I also cut a hat from the white tortilla. I spread peanut butter between the 2 tortillas and did strawberry jam stripes for the hat. I used my black food safe markers and drew on some fur and facial features. I used white cheese for the eyes, and fruit leather for the nose, whiskers and bow.

Green Eggs and Ham - I cut 2 ovals out of white cheese and stuck 2 green smarties on them. I then cut an oval out of a piece of ham and used my food safe marker and coloured it green.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - I actually didn't have all those colours of fish, but I used a small silicone container and put some coloured goldfish crackers in it. Kirsten totally got what book I was referring to, which was pretty cool.

ABC - I used my small alphabet cutters and cut the letters out of fruit leather

footprints for Dr. Seuss' The Foot Book

Pin It March is reading month and Polly at Helping Little Hands is hosting a fabulous read-a-long at her blog. I'm participating in this read-a-long and it certainly wasn't hard to pick one of our favourite books. Both my kids have adored Dr. Seuss' The Foot Book since they were babies. It was one of the first books I ever read to them and it continues to be one of their favourites. Our copy of the book has been so well loved, I couldn't even take a picture of it. It's barely staying together at the seams! The kids and I made an adorable footprint craft with a great quote from the book. We all know how I love my handprint/footprint crafts.

Oh how I love me some sweet little feet:

Use those sweet little feet to make this adorable craft and keepsake:

Here's how to make this really easy craft:

What you'll need:

paint
paintbrush
canvas
sharpie

Directions:

1. I have 2 kids, so I did 1 foot from each child in different colours. Paint the left foot and stamp on the canvas. Then paint the right foot and stamp on the canvas. Allow to dry.
2. I used the sharpie to write one of our favourite quotes from the book:

" Left foot. Right foot.
Feet. Feet. Feet.
Oh, how many feet you meet!"

And for good measure, a couple more shots of those sweet little feet. I can't get enough! Of course, the kids attached to those feet are pretty cute too.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Pin It Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday and we thought we'd have a little celebration around here. We're huge Dr. Seuss fans in this house and on Saturday we had a whole Dr. Seuss day. It was a lot of fun. I let the kids pick 4 of their favourite books and I planned a meal, a snack, a story and a craft around these books.

Just look at all the books we have:

Here's some pictures of our super fun day!

First we had green eggs and ham for lunch. When I say we, I actually mean me. The kids wouldn't even touch it. They do not like green eggs and ham! They do not like them, Sam-I-am.

Next we made a snack. Two of the kids favourite books are 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.' We decided to make Cat in the Hat Hats, and they were a huge hit (as if they wouldn't be!). To make these, I dipped an Oreo cookie in melted white chocolate. Allow them to dry. Then dip both ends of a large marshmallow in melted red chocolate melts and stick on top of Oreo. Easy and adorable!

Then we read a story. The kids picked their Dr. Seuss pop-up book, which is an incredible book. It includes seven Dr. Seuss classics and has amazing pop-ups, sliders, and fun stuff to read and see. I had James take a few pics of us while I read the story.

Last, we made a Horton Hears a Who craft. The kids adore Horton Hears a Who - both the book and the movie. They were really excited to make a Horton with a clover. We painted toilet paper rolls gray, glued on gray craft foam ears and trunk and black craft foam hair. I drew the details - eyes, lines on trunk, mouth, etc. To make the clover we used a green pipecleaner and pink pom pom. I taped this to the back of the trunk and the ear. Kirsten's Horton is the one pictured. Cam had already destroyed his Horton before his picture debut!

We had a really fun day and it was a great way to celebrate one of our favourite authors! Happy birthday Dr. Seuss!
