conversation heart kisses

These adorable little Hershey Kisses with stickers were very popular on the internet last Valentine's Day. I decided to make some of my own this year for my kiddos to give out for Valentine's Day. I love the look of conversation hearts because they are so darn cute, but don't really love the taste of them. My solution was to add a conversation heart sticker to the bottom of the Hershey's Kiss - and who doesn't love Hershey's kisses?!?! We put 3 of these little kisses in a small bag and the kiddos and I made some tags using their adorable little thumbprints for the hearts. I think their friends are going to love these. Now I made these stickers to fit the bottom of a Hershey's kiss - which is 3/4". Try and get your hands on a 3/4" punch if you can. I couldn't find one and as you can see, they aren't perfect. Not that the kids will care, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

My post popular post of 2011 by far was my Kool-aid lip gloss. Since so many people seem interested in making this cute little gift, I thought I would make some more for Valentine's Day this year. Kirsten and I decided to make some chocolate lip gloss this time, using the same steps as we did with the kool-aid. All you need is some vaseline, some cocoa powder, and a sprinkling of sugar for some sweetness. The colour is a nice chocolaty brown and leaves a very subtle tint on your lips. It doesn't really taste like chocolate, but the sugar gives it a little sweetness. When you realize how simple these are to make, you're going to want to make them for all your little Valentine's.

I had some leftover lip gloss containers from the last lip gloss we made and I made some brand new lip gloss labels if anyone wants them. I printed them on sticker paper and used my awesome 1" paper punch to cut them out. Here is what the labels look like:

If you want the labels, click here to get them for free!

* some people who made the kool-aid lip gloss were having trouble getting the drink crystals to dissolve. It seems if the melted vaseline is too hot you'll have trouble dissolving. I took more pictures this time of the process and hopefully it helps!*

What you'll need

vaseline
cocoa powder
sugar
microwave safe bowl
lip gloss containers
labels printed on sticker paper
1" paper punch

Directions:

1. put about 1 cup vaseline in a microwave safe bowl

2. heat the vaseline in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each heating (this is very important, don't just throw it in the microwave for a few minutes!). It took me about 7-8 minutes the batch of vaseline. It will be liquid when it is fully melted. Make sure you wear gloves or oven mitts and make sure children are being supervised. This is what it will look like when it's melted:

If you find the vaseline REALLY hot you may want to let it cool for a bit before you mix in the cocoa powder. I didn't and didn't have any trouble dissolving the cocoa powder but some of my other readers had trouble dissolving the kool-aid if the vaseline was too hot!

3. stir in a couple spoonfuls of cocoa powder and a sprinkling of sugar for some sweetness. You don't need exact measurements here. Just put some cocoa powder in until you reach your desired colour. I used a couple small spoonfuls. Stir until it is all dissolved. This only took about 30 seconds. If it's not dissolving the vaseline may be too hot. Let it cool a bit.

4. if starting to solidify you can heat again for another 30 seconds - skip this step if it is still liquidy

5. pour into your lip gloss containers and leave to solidify - a couple hours

6. print out labels on sticker paper

7. using either a 1 inch punch, or scissors, cut out the circle labels and attach to your lip gloss container

8. give to all your favourite people, but remember to save a few for yourself too!

Lunch box ideas and Bentos!

Pin It Well this is a new and exciting endeavor for me. My little Kirsten is starting Junior Kindergarten in 2 days and I now get to start packing her lunches for school. Colour me happy. She will be going all day, Monday to Friday. Her school presents a few challenges. One is that it is peanut/nut free. That means she needs to say goodbye to her precious peanut butter sandwiches. The other challenge is that they don't have 1 lunch break with a couple snack breaks. They have 2 'nutrition breaks' each day and that's it. That means that I have to pack her 2 of these bentos each day, but not with as much food as you would normally see. My four year old just doesn't need two jam-packed bento boxes each day. The only boxes I have right now are these awesome lock-and-locks with 4 dividers. I absolutely love them. I've also ordered some two-tier bentos, but they haven't arrived yet. I'm hoping when I get the two-tiered bentos that they will be big enough to pack her entire day's worth of food in each layer. We'll see.

To help give me some inspiration and ideas when making her lunches I created a lunch ideas PDF. I wanted to include foods that were healthy, and that Kirsten actually likes. If your child has different likes/dislikes you can add to the list or remove stuff. I'm pretty happy with the variety I have on it. Of course, these are just cold lunch box/bento ideas. You can always pack a thermos with hot food in it, which I will do sometimes too. They're just not as cute!

Here's what the printable PDF looks like:

I printed this out and have it on my fridge so I have easy access to it when I'm making her lunches.

This will be the first time Kirsten is eating out of a lunch box, so I've been making her practice school bentos all week to get her used to opening/closing containers and wrappers. She's done really well and just loves the new lunches I've been making her.

Without further ado, here are some of the practice bentos I've made this week.

bento3

This first one would be perfect for her morning nutrition break. I cut half a banana, and just started to peel it on the back side. That way she can easily peel it herself when she's ready to eat it. There's a strawberry nutrigrain bar cut in half so it will fit in the container and a container of yogurt with a fruit leather bear. When I pack these in her lunch bag, I'll wrap the yogurt in tin foil or something so it doesn't spill.

bento1

This next one will be great for an afternoon nutrition break. There's cold pasta salad made with 'butterfly' pasta, a little italian dressing, peas and parmesan cheese. A sliced nectarine with a cute pick and a couple graham crackers with fruit leather and sprinkle flowers.

bento5

This would be another great bento for her afternoon nutrition break. There's turkey bologna roll-ups, baby carrots, a box of raisins, and a couple crackers with bunny-shaped cheese.

bento4

Here's another great one for her morning nutrition break. Homemade chocolate zucchini bread, unsweetened strawberry kiwi applesauce with sprinkles and a yogurt drink. You can freeze the yogurt drinks to keep the lunch cold.

bento6

This is a great fall bento for her afternoon nutrition break. A turkey bologna sandwich cut into oak leaf with a cheese oak leaf on top. I used a food safe marker to draw on the face. Mini cheddar rice cakes and unsweetened applesauce with fall leaf sprinkles. I'll wrap the applesauce in tin foil when I pack it in her lunch bag.

bento2

I don't know if your kiddos will eat cold pasta, but mine will. I made butterfly pasta with sausages and my homemade sauce. A sliced cheesestring with a fruit leather tomatoe and a side of peas. You can put frozen peas in the lunch box (just run them under hot water for a second to start them defrosting), and they'll help keep the lunch cool and will be defrosted by lunch time.

Here's some links to some of the things I used to make these bentos:

kool-aid lip gloss

Disclaimer - please try this craft at your own risk. I had absolutely no trouble making this, but so many of my readers who have tried it have not had success. I don't like anyone wasting their time or money on crafts and I understand how frustrating that can be. Please know if you try this out, it may or may not work for you. I really can't figure out why it has worked for some and not for others.

UPDATE: I think some of my fabulous readers figured out the secret. Here's a couple of their comments and hopefully you too will have success!

Jenelle posted - I've figured it out!!!!! The kool-aid disolving problem is a result of the liquid being way too hot. When you heat (whether over the stove like I did, or in the microwave as others have suggested), wait for it to cool until it's almost getting solid again. Kool-aid cooks when its too hot - it must be just barely warm, luke warm, or cool to disolve properly. I found this out by mistake, as my first batch did not work. The second, I realized the scientific issue and waited for my melted jelly to nearly cool again before mixing in the kool-aid - and wa-la - lip gloss. Please pass this along. I truly am certain this is the key and the major caveat that should be included in this recipe. :-)

Kimberlyann posted - Hey there, I made a batch tonight with great success. I think the secret is ... stirring! I used Wal*Mart brand Kool-Aid and Vaseline and I only ended up microwaving the jelly for a total of five minutes. Between each 30 burst I stirred and stirred, and when it just began to get hot, I stirred until it liquified. Then, I left it to cool for a few minutes (it was room temperature, but still liquid) before stirring in the Kool-Aid. Thanks so much for the idea, and thanks to the other commenters for the tips!

Thank-you so much for the tips ladies!!

Chapped lips are in full swing at my house this time of year, so Kirsten and I decided to make our own lip gloss. We made them just in time for Valentine's day too, so we can give some away to our special friends. I bought small lip gloss containers and made up some labels using my stellar graphic design skills - lol! They aren't anything fancy, but I'll share them here in case anyone else wants to make some of these. This is really easy using only 2 ingredients - vaseline and kool-aid. We used cherry and strawberry kool-aid and they turned out fantastic. This was a lot of fun, is great for their lips, and tastes pretty good too. The cherry flavour even has a little tint to it. I've been using it myself! Here's how we made them:

What you'll need:

1 tub petroleum jelly (vaseline)
1 pkg of kool-aid drink crystals - whatever flavour you want, or you can make a few
lip gloss containers
labels printed out on sticker paper
scissors or 1 inch paper punch

Directions:

1. put about 1 cup vaseline in a microwave safe bowl
2. heat the vaseline in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each heating. It took me about 7-8 minutes to melt each batch of vaseline. It will be liquid when it is fully melted. It will be very hot! Make sure you wear gloves or oven mitts and make sure children are being supervised.
3. take out of microwave and stir in kool-aid drink crystals until desired colour is reached - I used the whole package for each batch. Stir until the crystals are completely dissolved.
4. if starting to solidify you can heat again for another 30 seconds - skip this step if it is still liquidy
5. pour into your lip gloss containers and leave to solidify - a couple hours
6. repeat this whole process if making more flavours
7. print out labels on sticker paper
8. using either a 1 inch punch, or scissors, cut out the circle labels and attach to your lip gloss container
9. give to all your favourite people, but remember to save a few for yourself too!

free printable toy labels

In an effort to keep my kids playroom organized, I decided I needed new labels for their toy buckets. Now I'm no graphic designer so these are far from perfect, but they serve my needs. I made these little labels using picnik, and if anyone wants them they can have them. The labels are 2 inches wide and I recommend printing on best quality using sticker paper. I bought the buckets at the dollar store and just attached the stickers and I'm done. I love that they have a picture on them, so my kids who can't quite read yet, can help clean up by using the picture to guide them. Colourful and cute!
